Attack on the USS Cole: Precursor to 9/11

In the early morning hours of October 12, 2000, the USS Cole was attacked by two suicide bombers in Yemen’s Aden harbor. The assault left 17 sailors dead and 39 injured. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) led a joint investigation into the bombing. Less than a year before the 11th of September attacks and following a failed attack on another US naval vessel also in the Aden harbor, this bombing was part of al-Qaeda’s repeated assault on the United States. Join our panelists for a discussion on the unique aspects of investigating this deadly bombing.

  • Ambassador (ret.) Barbara Bodine, former Ambassador to the Republic of Yemen during the attack and subsequent NCIS-FBI investigation
