Detective Wassil participated in search and recovery activities at the site of the World Trade Center in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Detective Wassil was diagnosed with neurosarcoidosis which left him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Detective Wassil died of his ailments on May 1, 2013.
